Specification Guidance

What you need to know before specifying a fire tested build-up.

  • Results relate only to the specific build-ups and test references listed. Any change to board type, thickness, insulation, framing size, or fixing arrangement may affect performance and must be checked separately.
  • Fire performance is only valid when the complete tested construction is replicated on site — including the number of board layers, screw type and centres, and insulation density.
  • Acoustic values are stated as Rw (laboratory) with the spectrum adaptation term where published. On-site performance (R'w) will typically be lower due to flanking transmission and workmanship.
  • Stud sizes shown are the tested sizes. Larger studs may be permitted under the same test scope, but this must be confirmed against the original test report before specification.
  • For C5 or high-corrosion environments, the framing must be specified with the appropriate coating. Standard galvanised steel is only suitable for dry interior conditions.
  • Always confirm the specification against the original test report and, where required, consult a qualified fire engineer or building control body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from contractors, specifiers, and site managers.

What does "fire tested build-up" actually mean?

A fire tested build-up is a complete wall, ceiling, or shaftwall construction that has been physically tested in an accredited laboratory to a recognised standard — typically BS EN 1364-1 for partitions or BS 476 Part 22 for older UK tests.

The test result only applies to the exact combination of components that were tested: the board type and thickness, number of layers, stud type and size, insulation, and fixing method. Change any one of those and the fire rating may no longer be valid.

Can I use a larger stud than the one in the test?

In many cases, yes — larger studs are often permitted under the same test scope because the test is effectively "at least" the tested size. But this is not universal, and it depends on the wording of the specific test report.

Always confirm with our technical team before substituting a stud size. We can check the original test report and confirm whether the substitution is covered.

What's the difference between Rw and R'w?

Rw is the laboratory-measured sound reduction index of the wall build-up in isolation. R'w is the on-site, apparent sound reduction index, which includes flanking transmission through floors, ceilings, and adjacent walls.

In practice, R'w is typically 3 to 8 dB lower than Rw, depending on the quality of the surrounding construction and workmanship. Building Regulations requirements are normally expressed as DnT,w or R'w, not Rw.

Do you provide the original test reports?

Yes. For any system in our register, we can supply the test summary or the full report on request. Email our technical team with the system reference number from the table above and we'll send the relevant documentation.

What if none of these systems fit my project?

Our register covers our most commonly specified systems, but many projects need a bespoke solution. Contact our technical team with your project requirements — fire rating, acoustic target, wall height, and environment — and we'll advise on the most suitable tested build-up or arrange a project-specific assessment.

How do I calculate the materials I'll need?

Use our System Selector & Materials Calculator. It matches your project to a tested build-up and produces a full materials breakdown — studs, tracks, boards, screws, insulation, and sealant — based on your wall dimensions.
